We'll be posting a multi-part series on some of the most popular terms used around topics of mortality surveillance and humanitarian crises.🕵️ Active Surveillance: This proactive approach involves actively seeking out cases of specific health conditions. It ensures comprehensive, timely, and accurate data collection but can be resource-intensive compared to passive methods.🚨 Acute Emergency Phase: The critical initial period of a crisis, characterized by significantly elevated disease and death rates, necessitating immediate survival-focused response activities.📉 Bias: Systematic errors in data collection or sampling can skew mortality statistics, affecting accuracy. Awareness of potential biases, like selection or reporting biases, is crucial for accurate mortality surveillance.⚰️ Burial Counting: An early emergency method providing basic death counts through visual observation of new graves or tracking burial cloth distribution, offering a quick, albeit rough, mortality estimate.🏘️ Community Cause of Death Interview: A community-based technique where volunteers gather basic data on deaths, aiming to identify suspected causes through structured, less rigorous interviews than formal autopsies.How many did you know?

Vital records data offer critical value and insight into a variety of public health outcomes and uses. Innovative efforts from county-, state-, and national-level approaches demonstrate the benefits that vital records data – namely birth and death data – can offer public health. Read the Data Foundation’s latest use case exploring the use of birth data for ethical predictive modeling in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, the use of individual-level data linkage in Massachusetts to address the opioid epidemic, and the creation of the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center to track the spread of COVID-19.These examples shed light on the impact of realizing the value of the U.S. vital record data and reveal opportunities to improve the overall vital records data infrastructure that could enable timely insights that better support public health outcomes across the country. Patient decision aids are evidence-based tools to support shared decision-making. They include pamphlets, videos, or web-based resources that describe the decision, the options, and help people think about what features are most important to them. Dr. Logan Trenaman, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Systems and Population Health, is the co-author of the Cochrane Systematic Review of patient decision aids, which was updated and released in early 2024. According to Dr. Trenaman, the updated findings re-affirm what has been known for some time. “Compared to usual care, patient decision aids increase patients' knowledge, their participation in decision-making, and help them make decisions that are aligned with their preferences. Further, there is no evidence of negative effects, like increased decisional regret, associated with their use," said Dr. Trenaman. Read more: https://ow.ly/WLtn50QGTph

Are you working on snakebite outcomes research?Globally, around five million people get bitten by venomous snakes every year. Among these individuals, nearly half develop illness, and around two percent die. As a neglected tropical disease that causes devastation to communities, research is vital to reduce the number of illnesses and deaths. This includes snakebite outcomes research, which includes collecting information on who gets bitten by snakes, what happens after they get bitten and who has access to antivenom. There are many researchers dedicated to better understanding and preventing snakebite envenoming around the world. The Global Health Network is conducting a research mapping exercise to understand who is working on this topic, as part of developing a ‘Snakebite Hub’ to support research teams around the world with open-access resources.If you are involved in snakebite outcomes research, you are invited to take part by completing the Global Snakebite Outcomes Research Mapping Survey.
