Lash extensions are a way to get the lashes you've always wanted, but they come with a price — and not just the actual cost of the treatment. Lash extensions are high maintenance and can potentially damage your real lashes.
If you notice that your natural lashes look thinner and more sparse as your lash extensions start to fall out, the treatment could be to blame. When it comes to getting lash extensions, it's important to do your research beforehand. Finding a professionally licensed lash technician and a salon that uses high-quality products is non-negotiable. An experienced lash artist can improperly apply extensions, which can do serious damage to your natural eyelashes.
Remove Eye Makeup Carefully
Dr. Palm said to be gentle when applying andremoving eye makeupand to avoid rubbing the area to keep your lashes from falling out prematurely.
"Most eyelashes have a relatively short growth cycle of hair – this is why our lashes are about one-fourth of an inch long rather than inches or feet like hair on our scalp," she explained. "However, eyelash hairs have a long pause cycle before they move to the shedding cycle, called telogen. Stress on the hair follicle may shift follicles prematurely into the shedding cycle."

Wash Your Eyelids Daily
Even if you're not wearing any eye makeup, you'll still want to wash your eyelids daily. Use an eyelid cleanser, such asOcusoft Lid Scrub($10), ormicellar waterto remove any oil and buildup that can lead to inflammation.
Don't Overfill Lashes
As much as you may be tempted to request long, heavy lash extensions, don't overdo it. Make sure your technician doesn't overfill the lashes when they're applying them.
"Overfilling lashes by placing multiple extensions on one eyelash is more likely to allow lashes to shed, because of the additional weight that's added on to it," Dr. Palm told us.

Applying a Nourishing Treatment

Give Your Lashes a Rest
It's important to take breaks between extensions to give your natural lashes time to replenish.
"Depending on the type of lashes you choose to wear, you should give yourself a month's break in between, if possible," said Patel.
"Semi-permanent lashes can be addictive, but a trained technician should advise you to have a full removal after a few in-fill sessions to ensure your lashes remain healthy and strong," added Patel.
